Product Description

This workbook develops a student’s spelling ability by using phonics rules to form its word lists. These rules include: short and long vowel sounds, double consonants, special blends, digraphs “oo” and “or,” diphthongs, word endings, prefixes, suffixes, and compound words. Word bank exercises, crosswords, fill-in-the-blank, writing practice, rhyming exercises, and other fun activities are used to provide variety while helping the student gain familiarity with how words and sentences are constructed.

Test sheets are included at the back of the book. With 36 units and 5 lessons per unit, the text is designed to be used daily over a 36 week period.

From Cathy Duffy Reviews:

"It doesn’t get any more affordable for solid spelling coverage than theBuilding Spelling Skills series. However, you can’t describe these books as “fun” or “colorful.” Instead, I would use words like “comprehensive,” “thorough,” and “challenging.” Illustrations are mostly clip art, and books are printed in two colors... This first grade workbook serves as much for phonics reinforcement as it does for spelling. All but the last two lessons are each designed around a phonics rule. (The last two lessons work on syllables.) The first five lessons cover the short vowels, working only on words with the designated short vowel sound. Almost all of the phonograms are covered in Book 1..." - Click here to read more

My son did this book and I really liked it so I bought it again for my daughter. The lessons are broken down by days of the week so its really easy to use in lesson planning. The lessons are thorough and easy to follow.

  2. The Best Spelling Book I have Found 5 Star Review

    Posted by on 10/25/2012

I like to look through different curriculum and pick the ones that fit our family best. I love this book. We are only in the first one, yet I have ordered the entire set so that I have them for the next years. The words are organized well, and our daughter learns. Our local public school teaches children to write words as they sound--that it is okay to spell them wrong, as long as one sounds them out (pumkin, famly, doller, etc.). These spelling books from Christian Liberty Press actually teach children to spell and to spell correctly--realizing that children can and should use the minds that the Creator gave them! They do so in an interesting and organized way, too.
