The phonics principles presented in this workbook instruct children how to spell words with suffixes “-tion” and “-ion,” silent “e” words, word endings, spelling the three sounds of “wh” and “ch,” consonant digraphs with “f” and “ph,” prefixes, compound words, and irregular spellings. The names of time and measurement and use of the apostrophe are also covered. Vocabulary-building is emphasized through contextual exercises; word-bank, crossword, fill-in-the-blank, and other exercises are included to help students gain familiarity with how words and sentences are constructed.
Test sheets are included at the back of the book. With 36 units and 5 lessons per unit, the text is designed to be used daily over a 36 week period.

From Cathy Duffy Reviews:
"It doesn’t get any more affordable for solid spelling coverage than theBuilding Spelling Skills series. However, you can’t describe these books as “fun” or “colorful.” Instead, I would use words like “comprehensive,” “thorough,” and “challenging.” Illustrations are mostly clip art, and books are printed in two colors... Book 4 continues in the same vein but moves on to accents, more complicated prefix and suffix work, contractions, and possessives, plus calendar and measurement words..." - Click here to read more

My kids have always used Building Spelling Skills from CLP, and they love the fun and easy to understand layout. Highly recommended!

After 3 years of random spelling words in a private school I chose to homeschool and use this book. The pre test exercises are nice to ready the student in word use and comprehension. The books plan allows for your own tweaking of the lesson. Just a really nice approach.

I have used this Spelling curriculum for more than ten years--and I've used all the levels. I like the organization of the book into 36 units/5 lessons, which fits perfectly with my school year. It also makes it easy for me to do my lesson plans. I will continue using CL Spelling with the rest of my kids--which will be a while, since I have a 1 year old.

This is a great book for spelling. Love how it groups like word endings or parts of words together for better understanding of spelling processes for the student. Book also makes it easy to add on addition spelling, definitions or context of word usage. Your 4th grader will love it. Mine hated spelling the last two years in private school where "word lists" were random and without any patterning, now she is beginning to like spelling again and see how it can be "an easy A".
