Product Description

This is an excellent book for family devotions. It is based on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, providing six short lessons on each question. It explains the catechism in simple language and includes key Scripture readings to reinforce the main points of each catechism question and answer. It takes only a few minutes each day, allowing time for discussion and memorization review.

Are you interested in improving your family's devotional life? Do you wish to find a good resource to help with family worship? Then consider Starr Meade's Training Hearts, Teaching Minds: Family Devotions Based on the Shorter Catechism.

Author Starr Meade has long served in a variety of Christian ministries. She was a missionary in France for three years with her husband, taught in a Christian school, served for ten years as the Director of Children's Ministries in a local church, teaches home school students in her home, and teaches Sunday school at her church. Starr Meade is also an accomplished writer, having written curriculum and family devotional materials while Director of Children's Ministries and has written at least six books.

Although Training Hearts, Teaching Minds was originally published in 2000, it continues to be a tremendous resource for families. As the author puts it in the introduction: "The purpose of this book is to provide a tool for Christian parents and churches who take seriously this task of importing doctrinal instructional instruction to their children."

Starr Meade has taken the Westminster Shorter Catechism and turned each of its 107 questions and answers into a set of devotions for a week—Monday through Saturday—providing two years worth of devotions. Starr uses a modern English version of the Shorter Catechism in order to make it more accessible for those who are not used to the 17th century English of the original Westminster Shorter Catechism.

While generally associated with Presbyterian churches, the Westminster Shorter Catechism has broad appeal as one of the last and best known of the catechisms to be written during the Reformation era. Even though Starr Meade and her family are part of a Reformed Baptist congregation in Arizona, she has made no effort to modify the catechism to conform to Baptist teaching.
