Course Description: In this course, the student will be exposed to the principles of freedom that were articulated by the Founders of our Republic and were refined by the later heroes of the nation. The student will initially be introduced to: a study of the first principle of American government, the failure of the Articles of Confederation, the history that led to the formation of the Republic and the production of the Constitution, the text of the Constitution itself, the meaning of original intent, and how to study Supreme Court cases. The student will then study the original texts of a number of Supreme Court rulings delivered over a period of 200 years, responding to questions and writing summaries pertaining to these court decisions. Through this study, the student will learn how the original principles of freedom that compelled the Founders have been compromised, and will be equipped, as an enlightened citizen, to participate intelligently in civil discussion aimed at returning our nation to the intentions and spirit of the founding.
