When Fools Rule and Civilizations End: What Will Come After?

When Fools Rule and Civilizations End: What Will Come After?

It’s an old story; one told by the history books for those with time and desire to read. When there is no longer a transcendent purpose in the hearts and minds of the average citizen, those who make it to the top are generally not the best nor the brightest but either the most cunning or the most easily controlled by the power behind the throne.[i]

Even in the ancient Roman world this was true as this quote from Thomas Cahill’s book How the Irish Saved Civilization:

“There are, no doubt, lessons here for the contemporary reader. The changing character of the native population, brought about through unremarked pressures on porous borders; the creation of an increasingly unwieldy and rigid bureaucracy, whose own survival becomes its overriding goal; the despising of the military and the avoidance of its service by established families, while its offices present unprecedented opportunity for marginal men to whom its ranks had once been closed; the lip service paid to values long dead; the pretense that we still are what we once were; the increasing concentrations of the populace into richer and poorer by way of a corrupt tax system, and the desperation that inevitably follows; the aggrandizement of executive power at the expense of the legislature; ineffectual legislation promulgated with great show; the moral vocation of the man at the top to maintain order at all costs, while growing blind to the cruel dilemmas of ordinary life—these are all themes with which our world is familiar, nor are they the God-given property of any party or political point of view, even though we often act as if they were. At least, the emperor could not heap his economic burdens on posterity by creating long-term public debt, for floating capital had not yet been conceptualized. The only kinds of wealth worth speaking of were the fruits of the earth.” [ii]

Look familiar?

Europe has become Eurabia[iii] and is over-run to the point they cannot easily police their own major cities and America is on her way with the Border Crisis that adds foreigners to the welfare program without so much as a by your leave from the tax paying citizens of all races that came here legally in the past.

Now, we live in the world of the great giveaway wherein national history, culture, values, and the future are destroyed both internally and externally by alphabet soup NGOs and the unelected officials that run them and influence the politicians they allow in power that will do their bidding.[iv]

Sadly, the average citizen is asleep at the wheel focused on their daily lives that become more difficult by the day while their children, equally part of “the great giveaway” assuming they are not aborted first, are “educated” in the arts of civilizational decline philosophically, psychologically, and emotionally by the Public School mandarins called teachers.

As for the unaverage citizens clawing their way to the various levels of power academically, financially, and governmentally – their children will receive the best education not for the purpose of rebuilding American civilization but rather to replace it. They are the future that will rule as the neo-aristocracy that will be expected to perpetrate the ideas they have been taught to control the rest of us.

An older civilization will be collapsed as a new global one will be the caretakers of us wherein people will be controlled from womb to tomb by a world of electronic monitors that will watch us 24/7.[v]

A Return to Independent Republics

Long ago yet not far away, what became the greatest of the nations of the world began on a few strips of coastland. What separates us from them is that they were unified by purpose, religion, and the will to begin a new world. These “strips of coastland” would be known as towns and colonies that had received charters from various monarchs. The rest was up to those that had braved the storm tossed Atlantic.

Pulling a lever for our favorite candidate (the lesser of two evils?) has never changed things within the hearts and minds of men, women, and children nationwide. The so-called political “unity” both pre and post-election within each party is only a temporary truce between alienated squabbling citizens until the next election spectacle brought to us by the power brokers who actually rule the country[vi] (as the recent “debt-limit” debacle that even some of the “stalwart Republicans” allowed Biden to push through show).

Rather, true change will require repentance at the local level within households, churches, and communities (2 Chronicles 7:14). That, and the need to band together to pray and work as they seek to rebuild society (Nehemiah 2:18) from the ground up: from neighborhoods, to cities, to counties, and individual states in that order.

Indeed, and as Ernest Renan wrote over a hundred years ago:

A nation is a soul, a spiritual principle. Two things which, it is true to say, only unite them, make up this soul, this spiritual principle. The one is in the past, the other is in the present. One is the common possession of the rich legacy of the past; the other is agreement in the present, the desire to live together, the will to continue to value the heritage received undivided… Therefore, a nation is a great unity, made up of the feeling of sacrifices one has made and of those that one would make again. A nation presupposes the past; however it continues in the present because of a tangible fact: agreement, the clearly expressed desire to continue communal life.[vii]

In other words, to truly have a unified people there needs to be a similar history that everyone could point to as a specific version of the past that they all share and take pride in. Equally important, and in some ways even more important, is the desire for a unified present with the hope of a shared future based upon both a plan for the future as well as a similar world and life view that everyone agrees to live in accordance with at the local level.

This “shared past” and “shared future” are inescapable aspects of city life and that “social bond” which is necessary if the city is to continue beyond one generation as a manifestation of community in the true sense. For it is inescapably the basis of the union that will determine the communion. As fourth century theologian Augustine noted, this “basis” was Christ and the love for Him and one’s fellow man that would provide for the manifestation of social peace within the true City amongst the earthly city.[viii] All else is a flash in the pan of history![ix] In the meantime, and as Doug Casey once wrote, “Let’s just hope the savers aren’t wiped out and the scientists don’t do too much government work.”[x]

Exodus of the Mind

For over 50 years now, CLH has championed a radically different path to societal leadership than most others. We were the first to provide homeschooling parents across the nation and indeed the world, with a curriculum that would not only teach your child to read, write, and count, but also help develop biblical character (Deuteronomy 6:1-7; Proverbs 22:6; Ephesians 6:4) that is the foundation of freedom, and all good things in society, especially biblical leadership (Ex.18:19-25).

A true revolution shows itself successful by a change of legal structure in total, and one that is in place 75 years after the initial revolution took place. All else is merely a passing revolt, or disruption, thus unimportant in the total scheme of things. Harold J. Berman, Law and Revolution, (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1983),p.99-100.
